The Magic of Cover Letters

Cover letter is a letter accompanying your resume in job application. It is a tool to project a professional image about yourself before the employer decides to see you face-to-face in an interview.

Sending a resume without a cover letter is like going to a job interview barefoot. It gives an impression that you don't take the employment opportunity seriously and you really don't care about anything concerning the job you apply for.

In real life experience, employers and HR personnel do judge a resume by its cover. A well constructed cover letter can impress the employer to take action on your resume. In other words, the piece of paper covering your resume actually generates prospective interview and increase the chances of you being employed.

A cover letter should be typed and confined to one page to catch the reader's attention.

* You should convince the employer about your strengths, and support your strengths with evidence.

* You should address to a specific person by name and position, and not "ToWhom It May Concern".

* Your cover letter should reflect your personality and style – qualities that are important in the hiring decision.

* Your tone should be professional, personal, positive, upbeat and value neutral throughout the letter.

* You should be career-centered or employer-oriented by indicating your wish to progress with the organization, to be educated and trained on the job etc.

* Avoid using self-centered statements about yourself, or flattering the organization you intend to join.

Wondering what to include in a cover letter?

* Where and when you learned about the position. Employers like to know where candidates learn about the vacancy in order to determine the effectiveness of their advertising strategies.

* What are your special skills and experience directly related to the employer's needs. This will save the employer's time to search for these important elements in your resume.

* Why you're interested in this position and/or the organization. Find out more about the organization so that you can state your objectives in line with the organization's goals.

* Address your gratitude followed by your signature using good quality pen.

1. Cara Berpakaian

Anda adalah anak baru di kantor. Jangan berharap teman sekerja langsung bisa mengenali kepribadian Anda. Penampilan luar merupakan salah satu poin kesan pertama Anda. Gunakan pakaian yang pantas dan tidak berlebihan di hari pertama bekerja. Jika Anda belum pernah sama sekali mengunjungi kantor Anda, tak ada salahnya memilih pakaian yang lebih rapih ketimbang yang lebih santai. Jangan menggunakan aksesori atau makeup berlebihan yang seakan meminta perhatian. Bisa jadi hal tersebut malah membuat Anda menjadi bahan omongan miring di tempat kerja baru.

2. Budaya Kantor
Mempelajari seperti apa budaya kantor baru Anda sangatlah penting. Ada kantor yang santai, formal, atau kombinasi antara keduanya. Pastikan Anda mempelajari dulu seperti apa budaya kantor Anda dari perilaku teman-teman sekerja, hubungan teman sekerja dengan atasan, dan sebaliknya. Ada kantor yang Anda bisa dengan santai menghampiri meja bos untuk berdiskusi, ada juga kantor yang bahkan Anda tak akan punya kesempatan untuk berbicara dengan bos besar Anda. Anda tentunya tak mungkin mengingat banyak hal dalam waktu yang singkat. Gunakan catatan untuk mengingat hal-hal yang penting.

3. Kepribadian yang Positif
Dalam proses bekerja, suatu saat Anda pasti membutuhkan bantuan rekan kerja. Jangan bangun dinding yang tinggi pada hari pertama kerja. Sapa rekan kerja yang Anda temui dengan senyum. Untuk awal, cukup sapa dengan senyum atau hai. Tak perlu terlalu keras berusaha mengobrol seakan Anda sudah mengenal mereka lama. Terlalu 'sok akrab' malah akan membuat Anda dijauhi di tempat kerja. Biarkan hubungan Anda tumbuh secara alami lewat proses interaksi sehari-hari. Pada masa-masa awal kerja, jika ada ajakan untuk hang-out selepas kerja, usahakan untuk ikut serta. Lewat kesempatan yang lebih santai tersebut Anda bisa mengenal rekan kerja lebih jauh dan mengakrabkan diri. Usahakan untuk seimbang dalam mendekati berbagai jenis rekan kerja. Terlalu banyak mendekati rekan kerja laki-laki atau terlalu memilih mendekati atasan akan membuat Anda cepat jadi bisik-bisik kantor.

4. Mengingat Nama & Posisi
Ini merupakan hal yang penting untuk membangun kesan pertama. Usahakan untuk mengingat nama teman sekerja Anda, minimal yang satu bagian atau divisi. Anda juga bisa membuat semacam peta nama agar mudah mengingat. Gambar secara umum posisi duduk dan tulis nama teman Anda untuk memudahkan mengingat. Pilih satu atau dua orang yang Anda ingat betul, lalu minta bantuan mereka untuk mengingat nama-nama teman lainnya. Mengetahui posisi orang tersebut di perusahaan juga penting. Jangan sampai sikut-sikutan di lift dengan rekan sekerja yang ternyata salah satu orang penting di perusahaan Anda. Memang tidak mudah untuk melakukan hal tersebut dalam minggu pertama. Lakukan bertahap dimulai dari orang yang paling sering berinteraksi dengan Anda.

5. Bantu & Inisiatif
Salah satu cara untuk mudah disukai di tempat kerja baru adalah menjadi rekan kerja yang senang membantu dan berinisiatif. Tentunya lagi-lagi jangan berlebihan. Pastikan pekerjaan Anda tetap bisa diselesaikan walau harus membantu tugas rekan kerja. Jika pekerjaan Anda sudah selesai, jangan hanya berdiam diri dan menunggu penugasan selanjutnya. Tanyakan kepada atasan atau rekan kerja apa yang bisa Anda lakukan atau siapa yang bisa Anda bantu.

6. Semangat Bekerja
Pernah saya memiliki rekan baru yang selalu datang telat dan sering pulang cepat. Hal tersebut tentunya bukan hal yang tepat untuk memberi kesan pertama yang baik. Usahakan selalu datang sedikit lebih cepat jika memungkinkan dan pulang setelah waktunya atau sudah ada rekan kerja lain yang pulang. Pelajari dulu bagaimana kebiasaan kantor baru Anda. Ada kantor yang karyawannya tidak pulang sebelum bosnya pulang. Ada juga yang bebas pulang pergi asal pekerjaan selesai. Untuk bulan-bulan awal selama Anda masih masa penilaian, usahakan selalu tepat waktu saat datang dan berkontribusi lebih. Setelah mempelajari kebiasaan perusahaan, pelan-pelan Anda bisa menyesuaikan diri. Salah satu kesan pertama yang harus dihindari adalah malas!

Satu hal lagi yang tak kalah penting adalah meminimalisir kepentingan pribadi pada jam kerja. Usahakan sesedikit mungkin chatting, membuka situs jejaring sosial, atau izin untuk hal-hal yang tidak terlalu penting.
7. Hindari Bergosip Godaan terlibat bergosip memang kadang susah ditolak. Untuk masa-masa awal sebaiknya hindari terlibat dalam kegiatan pergosipan. Jangan sampai citra Anda sebagai anak baru menjadi miring karena ikut-ikutan berkomentar dan terlibat dalam tim gosip. Sebagai anak baru, sebaiknya perbanyakan teman daripada lawan.

New Job Search Tips. Some companies are forced to lay off employees due to the condition of a company that is not possible, or some forced laid-off employees because they can not meet the performance requirements demanded by the company.

When you lose your job, you probably will feel the loss of some structure activity that have become part of the day - your day, eg morning activities which are no longer struggling with the congestion you feel. Do not feel stressed or depressed. Many things you can do to fill your time, if compared to the time when you are consumed by the work piling up.

Make Some new plans. Make a list of activities that previously have not had time to do. Determine the outcome you want to achieve from the activity. When you are able to determine the direction, you will be better able to accomplish the tasks that will bring you destination is.

Make a record of daily activities. Make a priority which should you do first to make your life direction and also avoid the stress that comes again. Always make a list of your activities for the days that followed, it helps you stay consistent every day.

Set up your own office hours. Office hours when you work here is not it time for you to find a new job. Create a special time for after finish CV and all the accessories for the purpose of applying for new jobs. Things like this also is the 'work' full time that can not be done with another job at a time when the same time. Make sure your homework is done, if you already have children make sure their interests are met so that you do not feel disturbed later.

Rest. Do not think you're just looking for a job that can be done via the internet then you do not feel tired, this activity would be more energy consuming than you work in an office. Conducting research on whether or not a job that will fit your need apply seriousness. Give rest to your body, you do not porsir power just because you want to immediately get a new job.

Take advantage of existing media. If you can not focus at home, you can use the search center of the local workforce as your office or library. Join in a group / mail-list, browse the Internet, a list of job seekers in the media like JobsDB.com, or through newspapers which includes job vacancies. All kinds of media you can use to find work.

Do not despair. Eliminate your pessimistic nature. Work will not come by itself without any effort. Keep trying and believe that you are able to get through everything.

All this has become your responsibility in the job search plan, with the focus and seriousness in carrying out your time management will take you to the job you want. Remember, that monitors your progress to achieve success is not a nobody but yourself and God.

Psychologically, if you hate your job, it only means it’s something you do against your will. Anything that resists a flow makes the flows difficult. Similarly, anything that assists a flow makes the flow move faster.

Equating this with the way you may think about your job, if you put “love” instead of “hate” to your job, work becomes easier for you. This will make you more productive. The company will profit more. As a result, they will pay you more. Then, everybody becomes happy.

If you are the employer, you can also do many positive changes that will benefit your employees. In the end, you will be the biggest beneficiary of this change.

You can start by putting up slogans around the walls of the workplace. These slogans may promote unity and harmony between management and staff where everyone will benefit out of it. These slogans may suggest positive attitudes that will form part of their work habits. There is power in words. These words, once written on slogans, will guide your staff to change in positive ways. It would be wise to turn these words into action. In time, the “I hate this job” chant becomes “I love this job”. This improvement in work attitude will be reflected in turnover of employees. As an employer, you will find less people leaving the company and more employees being satisfied.

Visitors visiting your company will be impressed with the slogans you place on the walls of your work place. So make them as meaningful as possible.

If you’re the employee, you must make a change in the way you think about your job. It cannot be denied that hating or loving a job has a lot to do with the way you treat it.

There are many instances wherein an employee does not see the good side of his job until he has left or lost it. You need not wake up one morning to this kind of scenario. To avoid this, let the good side of keeping your job pervade your thoughts.

Here’s another formula to make you love your job. Treat your job as though you are doing voluntary work. Think of your job as though you are helping the needy without expecting anything in return. You will be astonished with the result it will bring to your heart, health, and pocket. Treating your job as a volunteer work makes you work wholeheartedly, without any resistance.

It’s either you keep your job or you don’t. Hating it is not an option.
